Final Four: What UK vs Louisville means for the Bluegrass state

A Final Four berth means exposure and often major dollars for universities. But two?Final Four berths? University of Kentucky Wildcats vs. the Louisville Cardinals is a huge boon for the state of Kentucky.?

Bitter rivalries are the lifeblood of college sports. But rarely do the stakes get so high as they will this Saturday evening, when the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Louisville Cardinals go head to head for a shot at the NCAA title game in New Orleans. It?s the most important game in the rivalry?s history, with the two teams never having met this late in the tournament.

Duke and North Carolina?s legendary enmity has long been the standard against which all college men?s basketball rivalries are judged, but with a good game Saturday, the ?Battle of the Bluegrass? will certainly make its case to be near the top.

The two teams first met in 1913, with Kentucky winning 34-10. The rivalry went dormant through most of the middle of the 20th century, only to be resurrected by state government intervention. Seriously: In 1983, Kentucky governor John R. Brown Jr. pushed a bill through the state?s legislature forcing the two teams to play each other during the regular season. Both programs have a rich history of winning: The Cardinals have two national championships and nine Final Four appearances. The Wildcats, meanwhile, have the winningest program in men?s college basketball history, with seven national championships and 15 Final Four appearances.

The Wildcats are heavily favored to win on Saturday, but though a large swath of its citizens will be inevitably heartbroken after the game, the Commonwealth of Kentucky itself may be the big winner in all of this. For one, the state gets a moment of visibility in the sports world that?s rare: Kentucky doesn?t have any major professional sports teams, and college football doesn?t dominate the landscape the way it does in most other Southern states. College basketball is king, so having the state?s two biggest programs showcased ? together? on a national stage is a further opportunity to catch the attention of top tier high school recruits and new fans.? Last year?s pair of Final Four games were the highest-rated since 2005: Butler?s win over Virginia Commonwealth netted an average of 14.2 million viewers, while Connecticut?s win over Kentucky garnered 16.7 million viewers.

Along with that audience comes a number of factors that can help a university?s bottom line, including increased applications, alumni donations, and merchandise sales. After its Final Four run last year, Butler, a 4,500-student private university in Indiana, saw its application rates jump 41 percent. That year?s other Final Four Cinderalla team, VCU, found itself as a Top 5 Google search term.

The front-end costs for a team headed to the Final Four can be steep: In addition to selling a guaranteed number of tickets and buying up hotel rooms, a school must set aside $32,000 to throw a party (really), but the benefits, especially for lesser-known schools, can be immeasurable.

The coaches aren?t complaining, either. In addition to his $3.8 million annual base salary (set to get a $1 million bump starting next season), Wildcats coach John Calipari got a $50,000 bonus for winning the regular season SEC title, $100,000 each for making the NCAA regional semifinals and finals, and $150,000 for taking UK to the Final Four, according to an Associated Press report reviewing each of the Final Four coaches? contracts. If the Wildcats win the whole shebang, as they look poised to do, Calipari gets an extra $350,000 on top of that.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino, meanwhile, stands to make similar bank. His base salary is $3 million, and he made an extra $50,000 when the Cardinals took the Big East. Another $50,000 followed the NCAA regional semifinals and finals, then $75,000 more for the Final Four trip. If the Cardinals can pull off the upset and win the whole thing, he?ll get another $150,000.

The fans, meanwhile, get the rare privilege of seeing the two teams duke it out on one of the biggest stage in sports. Most college rivalries, including Duke/UNC, are contained within a conference, meaning that no matter how ferocious, a rivalry game rarely has implications beyond the regular season (one glaring exception was January?s college football national championship, when co-SEC teams LSU and Alabama played for the title). Big game grudge matchups do happen, like when the University of Florida Gators played the Florida State Seminoles for a college football national title in 1997, but a rivalry as storied as Kentucky-Louisville attaining such high stakes is a special treat.

Being bilingual wards off symptoms of dementia

Thursday, March 29, 2012

New research explains how speaking more than one language may translate to better mental health. A paper published by Cell Press in the March 29th issue of the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences examines how being bilingual can offer protection from the symptoms of dementia, and also suggests that the increasing diversity in our world populations may have an unexpected positive impact on the resiliency of the adult brain.

"Previous studies have established that bilingualism has a beneficial effect on cognitive development in children," explains lead study author, Dr. Ellen Bialystok from York University. "In our paper, we reviewed recent studies using both behavioral and neuroimaging methods to examine the effects of bilingualism on cognition in adults."

Dr. Bialystok and colleagues discuss the intriguing finding that the need to monitor two languages in order to select the appropriate one recruits brain regions that are critical for general attention and cognitive control. Using these cognitive control networks for bilingual language processing may reconfigure and strengthen them, perhaps enhancing "mental flexibility", the ability to adapt to ongoing changes and process information efficiently.

Studies also suggest that bilingualism improves "cognitive reserve", the protective effect that stimulating mental or physical activity has on cognitive functioning in healthy aging. Cognitive reserve can also postpone the onset of symptoms in those suffering from dementia. This is supported by studies showing that bilinguals experience onset symptoms of dementia years later than monolinguals.

"Our conclusion is that lifelong experience in managing attention to two languages reorganizes specific brain networks, creating a more effective basis for executive control and sustaining better cognitive performance throughout the lifespan," says Dr. Bialystok. "It should not be surprising that intense and sustained experience leaves its mark on our minds and brains, and it is now clear that the bilingual brain has been uniquely shaped by experience."

(AP) ? Home or away, with or without Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls just keep on winning.

Luol Deng scored 22 points and led a flurry of 3-pointers as the NBA-leading Bulls took another game on the road, blowing out the Atlanta Hawks 98-77 on Wednesday night.

Deng was 5 of 8 from beyond the arc and the Bulls finished 9 of 16 overall to improve their NBA-best record away from home to 21-6 and their overall mark to 41-11, even while missing Rose for the eighth straight game with a shoulder injury.

The Bulls haven't missed a beat, winning six times without their MVP.

"We played great," Deng said. "Guys got easy looks because of the ball movement."

Chicago built an 18-point lead in the second quarter. The Hawks scored the final six points of the half, then started the third quarter on a 10-2 run to get to 56-52.

It was all Bulls from there. They ripped off 20 of the next 26 points and a hefty contingent of Chicago fans turned Atlanta's arena into the United Center South, breaking out the "Let's Go Bulls!" chant.

"The thing we did well is, even when they made their run, we responded right away," Deng said. "It was just a great team effort."

Atlanta's frustration boiled over midway through the fourth quarter. The Bulls took off on another fast break, leaving Joe Johnson as the only man back against three Chicago players. Carlos Boozer flipped a behind-the-back pass to Taj Gibson, who was tackled ? football style ? by Johnson, both players going down in the middle of the lane.

Amazingly, Johnson wasn't even called for a flagrant foul, but the Bulls were hardly flustered. The final minutes were nothing more than a highlight show by the road team, plus a chance for Chicago's fans to chant for little-used Brian Scalabrine to get in the game.

He checked in with a little over a minute remaining.

Deng had plenty of help. Boozer scored 20 points, Gibson added 19, while Joakim Noah and John Lucas chipped in with 10 apiece. Josh Smith led Atlanta with 19 points, but he had only six in the second half.

"It's been pretty remarkable, with all the guys that have gone down, to have the record that we do," Chicago's Kyle Korver said. "Obviously, we'd rather have Derrick playing. But guys keep stepping up."

The Hawks raced to a 13-5 lead, forcing Chicago to call an early timeout. But Deng and the Bulls turned the tide with their deadly accuracy from beyond the arc.

"Chicago is a very disciplined team," Johnson said. "Everybody knows their role and plays their role to the fullest."

Deng made three straight from long range. Lucas swished a pair. Korver and C.J. Watson also connected. Chicago outscored the Hawks 33-13 over the first 9 1/2 minutes of the second quarter, storming ahead 54-36.

"The last couple of games, they beat us in the paint, so we focused on that. But they came out and made shots," Atlanta's Jeff Teague said. "Everybody was hitting shots, from the point guards to the forwards. Not much you can do about that."

After making their first seven treys, the Bulls finally missed when Lucas' attempt bounced off the rim just before the buzzer, but the visiting team still went off with a 54-42 lead. Chicago made 12 of 18 shots in the second period and did its usual stifling job at the defensive end, holding the Hawks to 8-of-21 shooting.

Atlanta finished 32 of 80 (40 percent) from the field, looking very much like a weary team playing for the fourth time in five nights. Teague had 13 points and eight assists, while Johnson was held to 12 points ? well off his team-leading 19.1 average.

"We couldn't get anything going," Smith said. "We were trying to create some kind of energy, some kind of momentum. It was hard to generate."

Johnson said the grueling schedule wasn't the only problem.

"Sometimes, we're not so disciplined," he said. "It seems like there's a few guys who don't know their roles on this team. We do a lot of things that don't help us."

Notes: Chicago also was without Richard Hamilton (shoulder), who missed his 12th straight game but is close to returning. ... Korver went off with a bloody forehead in the second quarter after getting whacked inadvertently by Hawks C Zaza Pachulia going for a rebound. Korver was patched up enough to get through the game and was expected to get stitches afterward. ... The previous night, Pachulia caught teammate Johnson, forcing him to take several stitches in his upper lip. ... Rapper Lil Wayne watched the game from a courtside seat. ... Chicago won the season series with the Hawks 3-1. ... The Bulls finished with a 45-36 rebounding edge, including 13 at the offensive end.

14-year-old surf lifesaver dies during competition

Second competitor in three years to drown during Australian event

Search teams on Thursday recovered the body of Matthew Barclay, a member of the Maroochydore club on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane.

GOLD COAST, Australia - GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) -A 14-year-old surf lifesaver has died during the Australian championships, the second competitor in three years to drown during the event at the same beach on the tourist strip.

Search teams on Thursday recovered the body of Matthew Barclay, a member of the Maroochydore club on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane.

Barclay, who disappeared on Wednesday afternoon during an under-15 board race, won two gold medals in the Queensland state junior titles two weeks ago and also won last year's prestigious junior Coolangatta Gold event.

All competition at the five-day championships, which were scheduled to end Sunday, was halted following Barclay's disappearance.

It's the third death on Kurrawa beach during the championships since 1996.

In March 2010, 19-year-old Saxon Bird died during the nationals. An inquest ruled that Bird had drowned after being hit by a stray surf ski.

In 1996, Robert Gatenby, a 15-year-old member of Kurrawa's under-18 surf boat crew, drowned at the championships as a cyclone was building on the Queensland coast.

On Thursday, the lawyer for Bird's family called for a royal commission into the running of the national surf lifesaving championships.

Chris Branson said surf lifesaving officials must stop using Kurrawa beach for national competitions.

"They've learned nothing from Saxon Bird's death, they've learned nothing from Robert Gatenby's death," he said. "It should not be held at Kurrawa at all. Ever, ever, ever."

Surf Life Saving Australia chief executive Brett Williamson said surf conditions on Wednesday were nothing like what was seen when Bird died.

"The size of the swell during the day was fluctuating between 0.8 of a meter (about three feet), and just over one meter," he said. "Certainly the information we were looking at, regularly on an ongoing basis, were that the surf conditions were not large."

Research Shows How Colds Lead to Coughing, Wheezing - Health ...

TUESDAY, March 27 (HealthDay News) ? The common cold appears to increase the number of ?cough receptors? in the airways and makes them more sensitive, which triggers coughing, wheezing and breathlessness, a new study reports.

People with asthma are especially vulnerable to this virus-induced coughing, said the researchers from Queen?s University Belfast. The cough receptors also are known as transient receptor potential (TRP) receptors.

?TRP receptors respond to chemical and physical stimuli in the environment, such as pollutants in the air, a change in air temperature and some of the toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke,? said Dr. Hani?ah Abdullah, one of the researchers. ?Once activated, these receptors cause the individual to cough and wheeze.?

The study?s findings were slated for presentation Tuesday at the Society for General Microbiology?s spring meeting in Dublin, Ireland.

?The increase in receptor numbers makes individuals more sensitive to environmental stimuli, making them more likely to suffer from prolonged bouts of coughing,? Abdullah said in a society news release.

The researchers took airway cells from healthy people and others with mild asthma and infected them with rhinovirus, the cause of many common colds. They found the virus triggered an increase in the number of cough receptors in the airway cells, particularly among those with asthma.

The study authors said their findings could help scientists develop drugs to effectively treat viral-induced coughing in those with chronic lung diseases.

?It?s feasible that therapies could be developed that block either the sensitivity of cough receptors or their increase in number,? Abdullah said. ?This would keep symptoms under control and ultimately improve the lives of asthmatics.?

Research presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Prehistoric fisheries offer clues to sustainable catch

Efforts to reform fisheries in the present just got a boost from the past. Two quantitative studies of prehistoric fisheries show that some early cultures figured out how to get high yields without overexploitation.

Jack Kittinger of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and Loren McClenachan of Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, Canada, studied the reef fisheries in Hawaii since the islands were first colonised 700 years ago.

With little archaeological evidence of farming, the earliest Hawaiians were reliant on the sea for much of their food. Previous estimates suggest they each consumed about 182.5 kilograms of seafood per year ? similar to levels in Pacific island countries which rely on seafood today. Kittinger and McClenachan worked out the total annual catch, assuming a conservative estimate that Hawaiian population reached 160,000 before contact with European settlers. It is thought that the population was probably more like 250,000 at its pre-settler peak.

"The coral reef fisheries yielded three to four times what people think is the sustainable yield for reef fisheries today," Kittinger says. "And we were very conservative in our yield estimates ? it's crazy."

Historical accounts and ethnographic studies suggest why the Hawaiian fishing operations were so successful. The pre-European society had a complex set of rules that saw reefs regularly closed to fishing, strict regulations on fishing gear, and restrictions on eating vulnerable species ? all remarkably prescient of modern regulations.

There is also archaeological evidence that they built extensive fish ponds stocked with juvenile mullet and milkfish as insurance against famine. The regulations make sense, given that Hawaii is at the mercy of tsunamis, floods, hurricanes and droughts, requiring sophisticated risk management strategies.

The Hawaiians were not the only Pacific community to fish sustainably. SFU researchers Anne Salomon and Amy Groesbeck have been studying the ancient "clam gardens" in the territory of the Kwakwak'awakw and K'?moks First Nations along the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Such structures were built and maintained for 2000 years, from Washington State to Alaska, until European settlers disrupted the practice.

Clam, clam and more clam

Clams are filter feeders and thrive on pebbly beaches that trap nutrients brought in with the tide. The gardens provide them with these preferred conditions. They are walled structures built in the intertidal zone of shores. As the tide rises, water cascades over the walls and washes nutrients into the beach behind, which has been artificially extended to create a clam-friendly pebbly habitat. At low tide, the area is exposed and easy to harvest.

The terraced beaches are extensive platforms that provide the clams with perfect living conditions, so in theory the shellfish there should grow faster and live longer, allowing for more sustainable cultivation. To test the claim, Salomon and Groesbeck seeded 11 walled and unwalled beaches with clams in the spring and then in the autumn dug them up to compare growth.

Their as-yet-unpublished work shows that the gardens work, says Salomon. "Our experimental data shows quantitatively that you get more clams from clam gardens, with higher survival rates and higher growth rates." She adds that it is clear that the people heavily exploited this method ? the bay under study has over 50 original clam gardens.

Salomon thinks this research could change how we cultivate shellfish. "We're going to need to double the world's food supply by about 2040," she says. "We can use the technology from ancient times to feed people today. Clam gardens are a perfect example of how people can do more with less."

Kittinger and McClenachan think their Hawaiian study also holds lessons. "They had basically the same tools in the toolbox, in terms of reef management strategies, but they used them differently and managed more effectively, with locally developed rules and regulations," Kittinger says. "It is evidence that coral reef fisheries can be sustainable. Ancient Hawaiian societies gave us the road map for how to achieve that in today's context."

Not all early societies had sustainable practices, though. Kittinger and McClenachan also looked at ancient fishing in the Florida Keys. Lack of freshwater probably limited the pre-European population to around 1000 people, and so they did not face food shortages ? and the locals had strong trade connections with the Caribbean. They had little need for Hawaiian-style regulations or sustainable fishing practices. Once European settlers arrived, however, an unsustainable fish export economy quickly emerged.

"Florida is a really good example of what happens when there's a lot of focus on one or two fisheries for export," says McClenachan. "It's a cautionary tale of what happens when you don't manage and don't diversify."

Losing Weight With Acupuncture - Health And Fitness Tips

Acupuncture can be very helpful to help you lose weight. Your energy levels will be improved and metabolism will be better also. If you have a healthy diet and are exercising, you can often lose 10 pounds within a month of starting acupuncture. Your body is better able to burn fat.

Acupuncture improves digestion and metabolism. Your metabolism is determined by your overall energy level and how the organs that produce energy in your body are functioning. For example, your kidney energy and spleen energy are key to have good energy levels. Your spleen energy is not the same as in Western medicine. In Chinese medicine, your spleen/stomach digest food and produce energy. If you are not digesting your food very well, you will not have good energy levels. That is one of the most important principles in Chinese medicine. We always treat digestion and energy levels in every patient.

When you get acupuncture, you will be surprised at how much better your energy level is. Most people do not realize how bad their energy level is until it is improved. There is a gradual decline in energy levels as you age. You can take Chinese herbs and get acupuncture to improve digestion and energy levels. Most people do best with twice weekly treatments for a month.

Acupuncture:

Improves energy and longevity

Digestion is improved

Improves fat burning

Gets rid of excess fluid in your body (edema)

Ear acupuncture can be helpful in controlling appetite. Ear acupuncture can be used to address hunger. Most American have appetite issues and are not eating due to hunger. Auricular acupuncture can reduce cravings. The points will shut down and stop working within two days. You will need to switch the stimulation to the other ear. Only one ear is done at once.

That is why acupuncture points on the body that boost metabolism and overall body function are so important. It is also important to take Chinese herbs such as ginseng or cordyceps to boost energy. When you take Chinese herbs, you can take them 2-3 times per day. They work on a very deep level to rejuvenate your body and improve energy levels.

Acupuncture for weight loss, can be very helpful to understand how it works. Please visit our site on Benefits of Acupuncture to see how you can be helped. Sarah Neil has been an acupuncturist for 13 yrs.

Villagers: Afghan slayings were act of retaliation

The motive for the March 11 shooting rampage that killed 16 Afghan civilians remains unclear, but villagers from the area are convinced that the killings were an act of revenge for a roadside bomb attack on American forces in the same area a few days before. (AP Photo/Ahmad Jamshid)

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? Several Afghans near the villages where an American soldier is alleged to have killed 16 civilians say U.S. troops lined them up against a wall after a roadside bombing and told them that they, and even their children, would pay a price for the attack.

Residents have given similar accounts to both The Associated Press and to Afghan government officials about an alleged bombing in the vicinity, which they said occurred March 7 or 8, and left U.S. troops injured. The residents also said they are convinced that the slayings of the 16 villagers just days later was in retaliation for that bomb.

Although the villagers' accounts could not be independently confirmed, their claim that the shootings by a U.S. soldier may have been payback for a roadside bombing has gained wide currency in the area and has been repeated by politicians testifying about the incident to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 38, is suspected of leaving a U.S. base in Panjwai district, entering homes and gunning down nine children, four men and three women before dawn on March 11 in the villages of Balandi and Alkozai. Villagers said the earlier bombing occurred in Mokhoyan, a village about 500 yards (meters) east of the base.

A lawyer for Bales in the United States also suggested that Bales was motivated by a bombing in the area.

However, a spokesman for the U.S. military in Afghanistan declined to give any information on the bombing or even confirm that it occurred, citing the ongoing investigation into the shootings. He also declined to comment on the suggestions that U.S. troops had threatened villagers with retaliation.

"The shooting incident as well as any possibilities that led up to it or might be associated with it will be investigated," Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, the spokesman, said Tuesday.

One Mokhoyan resident, Ahmad Shah Khan, told The Associated Press that after the bombing, U.S. soldiers and their Afghan army counterparts arrived in his village and made many of the male villagers stand against a wall.

"It looked like they were going to shoot us, and I was very afraid," Khan said. "Then a NATO soldier said through his translator that even our children will pay for this. Now they have done it and taken their revenge."

Neighbors of Khan gave similar accounts to the AP, and several Afghan officials, including Kandahar lawmaker Abdul Rahim Ayubi, said people in the two villages that were attacked told them the same story.

Mohammad Sarwar Usmani, one of several lawmakers who went to the area, said the Afghan National Army had confirmed to him that an explosion occurred near Mokhoyan on March 8.

On March 13, Afghan soldier Abdul Salam showed an AP reporter the site of a blast that made a large crater in the road in Panjwai district of Kandahar province, where the shootings occurred. The soldier said the explosion occurred March 8. Salam said he helped gather men in the village, and that troops spoke to them, but he was not close enough to hear what they said.

Ghulam Rasool, a tribal elder from Panjwai district of Kandahar province, where the shootings occurred, gave an account of the bombing at a March 16 meeting in Kabul with President Hamid Karzai.

"After the incident, they took the wreckage of their destroyed tank and their wounded people from the area," Rasool said. "After that, they came back to the village nearby the explosion site.

"The soldiers called all the people to come out of their houses and from the mosque," he said.

"The Americans told the villagers, 'A bomb exploded on our vehicle. ... We will get revenge for this incident by killing at least 20 of your people,'" Rasool said. "These are the reasons why we say they took their revenge by killing women and children in the villages."

Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne, has said that his client was upset because a buddy had lost a leg in an explosion on March 9. It's unclear if the bombing cited by Browne was the same as the one described by the villagers. After a meeting at a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Browne said Bales told him a roadside bomb blew off the leg of one of his friends two days before the shootings occurred.

Karzai's investigative team is not convinced that one soldier could have single-handedly left his base, walked to the two villages, and carried out the killings and set fire to some of the victims' bodies. The U.S. military has said that even though its investigation is continuing, everything currently points to one shooter.

Villagers in Mokhoyan, meanwhile, are convinced that the shootings were a case of revenge.

Naek Mohammad, who lives in Mokhoyan, told the AP that he heard an explosion March 8 and went outside. As he and a neighbor talked about what happened, he said, two Afghan soldiers ordered them to join other men from the village who had been told to stand against a wall.

"One of the villagers asked what was happening," he said. "The Afghan army soldier told him, 'Shut up and stand there.'"

Mohammad said a U.S. soldier, speaking through a translator, then said: "I know you are all involved and you support the insurgents. So now, you will pay for it ? you and your children will pay for this.'"

None of the villagers could identify the soldier who they said issued the threat.

Stop! Before You Take On Home Improvement Projects, Read This ...

Home improvements don?t have to be overwhelming when you break it down into small projects and take it slow. By keeping an open mind and searching for new ideas and tips, the process of improving your home can become easier. In this article, we will provide some valuable advice that can give you the assistance you need for any home improvement project.

Stuffing steel wool into holes or cracks that mice might be using is a temporary yet effective solution. This is a preventative measure, used while full repairs are made. Mice are unable to chew through the steel wool which makes it invaluable.

A home improvement project which can save your foundation from costly repairs is ensuring the water that lands near your house during a storm flows away from your walls. A simple fix would be to use a longer downspout to drain water further from your home, or you may need to increase the slope from your foundation to the street by grading.

When you are making home improvements, spend some time on your porch. The porch will will be the first visible area anytime your neighbors or friends pay a visit. Take away any junk strewn about, add a fresh coat of varnish, and try adding little touches like furniture, flowers, and lighting. Your home will be worth more if you make these changes.

Always turn off the water if you are going to work on your kitchen or bathroom. Before starting any home improvement project, know where the water shutoff valve is. By doing this, you will prevent flooding from occurring.

Use asphalt sealer in order to keep your driveway from cracking. Sunny weather can damage an asphalt surface, but wet weather is what to really watch out for: Water that gets into cracks can freeze and thaw repeatedly, accelerating the damage. The asphalt sealant will protect against water and sun and keep the cracks sealed to prevent damage from freezing.

Heating your tile floors is a great addition for not much money. Look into radiant heat equipment, especially if you want to replace your flooring anyway. Doing this will definitely leave you pleased that you made the effort because this type of heating is efficient and feels great. This can also improve your home?s value significantly.

Stucco is a good option for outdoor siding. Stucco is a simple, age-old process, but requires some expertise in application and special forms to hold it in place, so you may want to hire a professional. Stucco has long been popular because its beautiful appearance is long lasting.

One simple and cheap home improvement is to purchase a new mailbox. A newer, cleaner mailbox adds curb appeal and makes your home appear more modern. Check with your city to be sure you are familiar with the regulations before installing your new mailbox. By spending an hour or two you can make a very noticeable improvement.

When starting a home renovation project, you should always aim to take safety precautions. You run the risk of ruining your work or injuring yourself if you don?t take proper precautions. Learn to follow power tool directions carefully and be sure you fully understand the directions prior to starting any project.

Increase your available home improvement tools while saving money at the same time, by pooling you resources with neighbors and friends. Borrow and loan the more specialized tools you need for certain projects so that you and your neighbors split up the costs of acquiring them. You two can also share your expertise with each other.

Swap out all light bulbs at your house for the energy efficient kind. By doing this you will minimize your utility cost and also preserve the environment, and they will provide better light and last longer as well. Replace old bulbs with energy efficient bulbs as they blow out.

By using tips like these and by being prepared, you can avoid troublesome, poorly-planned home improvement tasks. Pick up a hammer with confidence and get started on your own home improvement project today!

Business Intelligence Systems | Renee Blaauw

Many companies in different industries are using? business intelligence system (BI), a system that tracks the raw data such as sales transactions, labor costs etc. of a company. For some companies the use of a BI system yields better results than for others, how is this possible?

?

The first thing that a company should understand when starting to use a BI system is that the system provides a lot of very useful data, however it does not analyze this data and is not able to determine what data is useful to the company. It is up to the company to decide what data they want to track with the BI system, how they want it to be presented, and what is going to be done with the results. It is important to build a strategy around the use of the BI system.

For the restaurant industry in particular a BI system is very useful. Due to the fact that the restaurant industry is very operational driven and competitive, results from the BI system can be implemented fast. Determining the core business of the company and building the BI system around this core is important for the quality of information provided by the BI system.

Even though other industries cannot implement change as quickly as the restaurant industry, the correct information derived from the core business of the company will still help determine choke points and new opportunities for a company. The job of sales people is to sell, however often they are stuck behind their desk doing administrative work. Since all sales people are looking for the same type of information when preparing a presentation or sales call the BI system can help make the process of acquiring this information more efficient. This leads to more time to sell for the sales people, and should lead to higher revenue.

?

To conclude a BI system can benefit companies in many industries tremendously, as long as those companies beforehand determine what information is important for them, how they want it presented, and are able to implement the system with the cooperation of? all parties involved. A BI system can improve the quality and efficiency of work in almost all departments of a company, from sales, to accounting, to operations etc.

The yard stick for success depends upon the counting of no. of shots given by the male. A young man should be able to count and deliver 1000 shots also. So that his anxiety shall be diverted to counting work. More over, if one is likely to ejaculate @ the 30th shot, one should foresee @ the 20th shot itself. By the 15th shot he should withdraw and indulge in talks to divert and postpone ejaculation. Resume coitus after 15 minutes to recoup and proceed to increase the number slowly, but steadily. Daily one should increase the yardstick with increased no. of counted shots.
That?s how every husband should target to reach and satisfy his beloved life-partner.

Circumcision Linked to Lower Risk for Prostate Cancer, Study Finds

MONDAY, March 12 (HealthDay News) -- Men who have prostate cancer are less likely to be circumcised, according to new research.

The researchers suggest a possible reason is that circumcision reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases that may contribute to prostate tumors.

The study doesn't confirm that circumcision directly lowers the risk of prostate cancer, and the study lead author cautioned that the findings shouldn't play a role in the decisions of parents about the sometimes-controversial procedure.

Still, the results fit in with existing knowledge about how cancer develops, said study author Dr. Jonathan Wright, a urologic oncologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington in Seattle.

"It helps us to understand how cancers develop and ultimately learn how to combat the disease," he said.

Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin that covers the penis tip, and it is usually done shortly after birth. Opponents say the procedure is unnecessary, painful and a disfigurement that robs men of sexual sensation. But research in recent years has suggested that circumcision reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Scientists think circumcision does that by eliminating the ability of germs to lurk under the foreskin.

Previous research by the study authors found no link between circumcision and lower risk of prostate cancer. But the new study is larger, Wright explained.

The researchers examined medical records and surveys of 1,754 men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer in the Seattle area and 1,645 similar men who were healthy.

Of those with prostate cancer, about 65 percent had been circumcised before the first time they had intercourse, compared with 69 percent of the healthy men.

Those with prostate cancer were still less likely to have been circumcised after the researchers adjusted their statistics so they wouldn't be thrown off by factors like high or low numbers of men of certain incomes, education levels or race.

However, the study doesn't prove that circumcision has anything to do with prostate cancer. Some other factor could explain this difference between the men with prostate cancer and the healthy ones, or it could be a statistical fluke.

But it makes sense that germs from sexually transmitted diseases would find it easier to get into the body, and then into the prostate, in the uncircumcised men, Wright said. It's possible that "they set up shop in the prostate and turn on inflammation, and then the inflammation leads to cancer development," he said.

Research has linked infections to some kinds of cancer, he explained.

Brian Morris, a professor of molecular medical sciences at Australia's University of Sydney who studies circumcision, praised the study's design and said it "provides even more reason for parents to opt for this 'surgical vaccine.'" Circumcision protects baby boys from urinary infections that can damage their kidneys as well as other diseases over their lifetimes, he said.

Natasha Larke, a lecturer in epidemiology and medical statistics at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine who has studied circumcision, said the study was well done, although there were limitations. For one, the study didn't include all prostate cancer patients in the Seattle region, she said. And even if a possible effect of circumcision is confirmed, it appears to be "modest," Larke added.

The study was published March 12 in the journal Cancer.

While the study found an association between circumcision and lower risk of prostate cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Schwinn's Top Elliptical Machine | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Schwinn are a highly respected industry leader when it comes to sports equipment. I want to tell you about their new Elliptical Strider, and why you will benefit from it.

Low Impact, High Intensity

At first glance, the Schwinn 418 Elliptical looks somewhat like a ski machine, and more like a stair machine. Take a closer look at the 418 in action, and you see that it has unique program settings which simulate walking, skiing, climbing, and cycling, with an elliptical motion that gives the user a low impact workout without sacrificing intensity. Elliptical cross trainers are becoming increasingly popular because they offer a cardiovascular workout that aids in building strength and stamina, minus the joint stress caused by treadmills, running, and high-impact aerobics.

Stress Injuries

Since 1895, Schwinn has manufactured bicycles, making itself one of the most recognized names in the industry. Many owners of Schwinn products are avid cyclists with common concerns about ?over-use? joint injuries and repetitive stress injuries (RSI), like tendinitis, and bursitis, which cause irritation and intense pain throughout the knees, legs, and hips. When it comes to repetitive stress injuries, many immediately think of the wrists, arms, and hands, but those involved in great physical activities risk similar injury to other muscle groups.

The Schwinn 418 Elliptical addresses these concerns, appealing to both hardcore athletes, and general exercise enthusiasts ? and to anyone concerned about the long-term effects of high-impact exercise on the body. Prevention is essential to fitness and health. However, those with existing joint injuries should consult a doctor before starting a fitness program, or using exercise equipment.

Schwinn 418 Elliptical Features

Elliptical machines by NordicTrak, SportsArt, and Precor, for example, feature bulky flywheels located at the rear. The Schwinn 418?s flywheel is located in the front and out of the way, which saves space and adds to the user?s ease and comfort. Although the 418 Elliptical is not collapsible for easy storage, it is noticeably narrow and compact, taking up less space in the home than other elliptical machines.

The Schwinn 418 Elliptical?s features are standard to most elliptical cross trainers, many of them being more expensive than the 418. A calorie counter, RPM count, speed, time, distance, and other features are all displayed on a simple, compact LCD screen. With challenging workout programs like plateau, mountain, rolling, and manual mode, users can vary their workouts fit needs.

The 418 has a unique feature, the articulating foot plate. The foot plate stays parallel to the bottom of the user?s foot, supporting the heel, and providing added contact, which increases stability, efficiency, and comfort. Schwinn also boasts a ?lengthened stride? of stride of 18?, 46 cm, however, this may not suit the tallest users. In comparison, the Octane Fitness Company?s Pro350XL elliptical club model accommodates users with strides up to 24 inches, a full 6 inches more than the Schwinn 418.

The 418 is moderately priced, and costs 3 times less than some of the more expensive elliptical machines on the market. Consumer Reports named the 418 Schwinn Elliptical as a ?Best Buy?. Schwinn also produces the 428 Elliptical, which costs a couple hundred dollars more than the 418, and features a wireless heart rate monitor, and reverse action, which targets different muscle groups.
