Syrian envoy to London defects amid Aleppo fight
LONDON (AP) ? Syria's top diplomat in London said he could no longer represent the regime and defected Monday, as civilians fled the commercial hub of Aleppo in droves amid 10 days of fierce battles between rebels and government forces.
Britain's Foreign Office said that Khaled al-Ayoubi, the charge d'affaires, told officials that he wasn't willing to represent the regime any longer, the latest high-profile defection of a diplomat from Syria over the bloody crackdown on the opposition since March 2011.
Fighting is heating up in Aleppo, Syria's largest city with 3 million people. The U.N. said 200,000 Syrians have left over the past 10 days as the government trains its mortars, tank and helicopter gunships on the neighborhoods seized by the rebels.
"I am extremely concerned by the impact of shelling and use of tanks and other heavy weapons on people in Aleppo," Valerie Amos, the top U.N. official for humanitarian affairs, said in a statement late Sunday. "Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas," she added. "They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water."
Amos said U.N. agencies and the Syrian Red Crescent are working together on supplying those affected by the fighting with blankets and humanitarian supplies, but many remain out of their reach because of the violence.
"It is not known how many people remain trapped in places where fighting continues today," she warned. Aleppo is Syria's largest city and commercial hub with about 3 million inhabitants.
Aleppo is some 50 kilometers (30 miles) away from the Turkish border and some of those fleeing the city are headed for Turkey, where tens of thousands of Syrians have already found refuge during the 17-month uprising against authoritarian President Bashar Assad's rule.
Turkey is deploying more troops to the border, sending tanks, armored combat vehicles, more missile launchers and infantry troops, the state-run Anadolu agency reported.
Greece has responded by quadrupling the number of guards on its borders with Turkey out of fear of a potential influx of Syrian refugees.
Those fleeing Aleppo have described to The Associated Press incessant shelling, shortages of food and gasoline and soaring black market prices for everyday staples. In online videos they can be seen scurrying through streets against a backdrop of gunfire and climbing onto any form of transportation available to escape, including trucks, cars and even heavily laden motorcycles.
"Dozens of families are packing their belongings and leaving in cars and trucks," said an activist in a village near Aleppo, who declined to give his name for security reasons. "They are only taking light possessions that they can carry, like a few clothes, some valuables and that's it."
"I saw cars with eight, nine people packed in them fleeing the bombing," he added. He said rebels had seized a nearby checkpoint early in the morning and captured several tanks. The regime responded by shelling the rural area just northwest of the city. "Entire families are leaving."
Videos of the attack on the checkpoint posted Monday in the Internet show fierce exchanges of fire in the early morning and then later, victorious rebels hauling out boxes of ammunition and taking heavy machine guns for the fight in Aleppo.
The activist said refugees have fled to nearby villages where they stay with relatives or find shelter in local schools. Some however, are making the trip to the Turkish border.
Syrian state media had reported the army had "purged" Aleppo's southwestern neighborhood of Salaheddine and inflicted "great losses" upon the rebels in one of the first districts they took control of in their bid to seize the city.
Activists, however, disputed these claims and just described another day of fierce shelling of certain areas, backed up by the occasional foray on the ground. The assault has knocked down power lines and the neighborhood has been without electricity since the morning.
Gen. Babacar Gaye, the head of the United Nations Observer Mission in Syria expressed concerned over the ongoing violence in Aleppo, noting that "helicopters, tanks and artillery are being used."
Gaye visited the town of Rastan, just outside the city of Homs in central Syria, which has witnessed heavy fighting. Footage from his trip showed a devastated town with burnt out tanks by the side of the road and many destroyed buildings.
"We will be monitoring the level of violence and the use of heavy weapons in Syria. We will also be assessing if there is readiness and, if possible, progress for local confidence-building measures and national dialogue," said Gaye, whose mission is to monitor a cease-fire that has never been observed by either side.
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said late Sunday that the use of heavy weapons, particularly helicopters, is just another nail in President Bashar Assad's coffin. He spoke during a stopover in Tunisia as he kicked off a Mideast tour expected to focus heavily on the unfolding crisis in Syria.
Al-Ayoubi, the Syrian diplomat in London, is the fourth high ranking envoy to defect. He was preceded by the charge d'affaires in Cyprus, her husband, a diplomat in the UAE, and by the ambassador to Iraq.
A Foreign Office spokesman said al-Ayoubi was staying in a safe location in the United Kingdom and was in contact with British officials. His departure leaves five staff at the embassy and there has been no indication that they would be leaving their posts as well.
Turkey also reported that the deputy head of security for Syria's Latakia region, a regime stronghold, had defected as well.
The brigadier general was among a group of 12 Syrian officers who crossed into Turkey late Sunday, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. His defection raised to 28 the number of generals who have left for Turkey since the start of the 17-month-old uprising.
Syria's army remains mostly intact, however, and still vastly outguns the rebel forces, who are armed for the most part with assault rifles and machine guns and don't have the heavy weapons necessary to effectively oppose tanks and helicopter gunships.

Canon LV-7292M
The Canon LV-7292M is an LCD-based projector that provides decent data and good video image quality for a small business, and is fairly portable as well. It has a relatively low price, and low brightness for its class. It's a reasonable choice, though it brings nothing that makes it stand apart from similar machines.
The LV-7292M has native XGA resolution (1,024 by 768 pixels), a 4:3 aspect ratio suitable for most business presentations. It has a rated brightness of 2,200 lumens, low by today's standards where most similar projectors have a brightness of around 3,000 lumens. Its 500:1 contrast ratio is unusually low, which may explain one quirk that I discuss in the section on data image quality.
The silver and dark gray LV-7292M measures 3.9 by 13.0 by 9.6 inches, and weighs 6.5 pounds, so it's reasonably portable, although it lacks a carrying case. Behind the lens are the (reasonably responsive) focus wheel, and a zoom wheel with a 1.2x zoom.
The LV-7292M has a modest selection of ports for a portable projector: a VGA port (which triples as a component video and S-video input); 3 RCA jacks for composite audio/video; HDMI, RS232; audio-out, and a microphone jack.
Testing
I tested the LV-7292M at about 8 feet away from our 6-feet-diagonal test screen, at which distance the projector's image filled the screen. The image was fine when the room was in darkness; it was still quite usable though a little weak when ambient light was added.
The LV-7292M's data image quality is suitable for typical business uses, though you might not want to use it in situations that demand exacting color. Text was readable down to the smallest sizes. I did notice some tinting; white backgrounds sometimes appeared with a slight yellow tinge, and some grays looked a bit greenish. Also, I noticed some yellow or blue fringing where bright and dark areas meet. The tinting was reduced somewhat by switching from Standard Mode to Presentation Mode; it was even less of an issue when I changed from a VGA to an HDMI connection. However, switching to HDMI notably reduced the projector's ability to distinguish between very dark, similar shades, and between very light shades as well. (Perhaps this was due to the projector's low contrast ratio.)
Video quality was reasonably good for a data projector, suitable for showing short to mid-length clips as part of a presentation. As an LCD-based projector, the LV-7292M is immune from the rainbow effect?little red-green-blue rainbow-like artifacts that appear with moving images or when one moves one's head?that is a frequent problem with DLP projectors, particularly with video.
As is not unusual with a portable projector in its class, the 1-watt built-in speaker provides rather feeble audio, useful only in a small room or when one is very close to the projector; you may want to use external speakers with it.
The Canon LV-7292's data and video image quality is suitable for typical business needs. This low-priced projector gets the job done, though it brings nothing special to the table. Canon sees it for general use in small or home offices, and it's certainly adequate for that role.
At 2,200 rated lumens, it is of modest brightness compared with its peers. Even the Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 93+, at 2,600 rated lumens, is of lower brightness than most mainstream XGA projectors, but it provides high-quality data images, good video quality, and a good sound system at a low price. The NEC Display Solutions NP-V300X is brighter at 3,000 lumens and provides great data image quality, but it's a bit more expensive, and as a DLP projector its video quality is impacted by the rainbow effect.

More than a decade of robust Spanish growth ended in 2008 as a construction boom went bust, and the global economic crisis further undermined the economy, leaving millions without a job.
But what this means to Spain's long-term future is not certain. Some emphasize the benefits of an?internationally experienced generation upon their return, while others stress that their exit is depriving Spain of its most promising workers.
?We?re leaving because of the crisis, but the experience we?ll get in the US is more rewarding,? said German Coppola, a 37-year-old who in September is slated to move to Texas with his wife and three small children, after deciding to take a job in a technology company rather than taking a risk in Spain by continuing his own business.
?I got a good job offer doing what I do,? Mr. Coppola said. ?On the other hand, the Spanish market is not fit for small companies in the technology sector. And most of our clients don?t have money to invest, and if they do, they don?t know what to invest it in.?
The Spanish National Statistics Institute released preliminary data for the first half of 2012 last week, showing a rising exodus of Spaniards since 2009.
From 2009 to 2010, the number of Spaniards that moved to other countries increased by 5 percent, while in 2011 the percentage increase soared to 70 percent. In the first half of 2012, the number climbed almost 45 percent compared to the same period last year.
The number of departures, which in 2011 tallied almost 62,500 Spanish-born citizens, should not be taken at face value. It is difficult to track migratory movements, especially within a borderless European Union. But the trend is indisputable.?
Brain drain?
When the official statistics came out last week, Spanish media, many politicians, and columnists took a pessimistic view and warned of a brain drain that would deny Spain its most promising engineers, doctors, scientists, and similar professions in the future.
Of those who left in 2011, one-third were aged between 22 and 35 years old. The data suggest that most moved to a country within Europe, and to a lesser degree to Latin America and the US. The number of Spanish citizens that left in the first half of 2012 increased by 45 percent.

LONDON (AP) ? Mitt Romney struggled Friday to stem political fallout at home after insulting Britain's handling of the London Games. The stumble at least briefly pitted the Republican presidential candidate against America's strongest ally while limiting his ability to capitalize on more troubling U.S. economic news.
At the same time, President Barack Obama used his office to try to take advantage of the Republican's missteps abroad, praising Britain for its Olympics preparations one day and sending money to Israel the next ? just as Romney prepared to visit that nation.
The confluence of events ? just as the world focused on London's opening ceremonies ? confounded Republicans and tickled Democrats. People in both parties wondered aloud how the former Massachusetts governor could have complicated the opening leg of a three-nation tour carefully crafted to highlight his diplomatic strengths and personal Olympic experience.
"You have to shake your head," GOP strategist Karl Rove said Friday on Fox News.
It was unclear just how much damage Romney, who had hoped to burnish his limited foreign policy credentials, did with an American electorate that hasn't fully tuned into the race. But he certainly stoked talk in political circles in Washington, if not elsewhere, of political tone-deafness, and he raised questions about his readiness to stand on the world stage.
He drew more attention Friday night when he attended the opening ceremonies. Just as the show was about to begin, one BBC host noted that Britain's team was ready for the games ? "despite what Mitt Romney says."
Publicly at least, Romney's campaign shrugged it all off as having little impact on American voters and moved aggressively to change the subject. His aides hastily organized a conference call with reporters to discuss his schedule in Jerusalem and preview a speech there two days away.
British press reports laced with lingering resentment targeting Romney's initial comment ? that problems with Olympic preparations were "disconcerting" ? made it difficult for him to turn the page.
A day after London Mayor Boris Johnson assailed Romney by name in a rally before tens of thousands, Britain's Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, the cabinet minister in charge of the Olympics, lashed out at him.
"When we have the opening ceremony tonight and we tell the world that eight of the world's top 10 sports were either invented or codified in Britain ? and only two in America ? I hope Mr. Romney is watching," he said Friday.
Seeking to quiet the uproar in its second full day, Romney declared on NBC: "It looks to me like London is ready." He also observed, "It is hard to put on the games in a major metropolitan area." Asked about the stir, he said, "I'm absolutely convinced that the people here are ready for the games, and in just a few moments, all the things the politicians say will be swept away" by excitement over the competition.
Romney's trip comes just over 100 days before an election that is expected to be close and, for now at least, is dominated by the economy's sluggish recovery.
Underscoring it, the Commerce Department released new numbers Friday showing that the U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of 1.5 percent from April through June, as Americans cut back on spending.
But, because he was overseas, Romney was in no position to try to leverage the latest figures for political gain. He's spent his entire campaign doing that to press his argument that Obama has had long enough to spark the economy and has failed.
Romney was keeping to his promise not to criticize Obama directly while on foreign soil. Instead, he dispatched a series of allies to lambaste the president.
"Despite a string of bad economic reports, President Obama refuses to change course," said Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a potential Romney running mate.
As Romney was dealing with the Olympics slip, the White House on Thursday emphasized that Obama was on Britain's side, a suggestion that Romney was not.
Said press secretary Jay Carney: "In keeping with our special relationship, the president also made it clear that he has the utmost confidence in our close friend and ally, the United Kingdom, as they finalize preparations to host the London Olympics."
By Friday, Obama, himself, sought to upstage his Republican opponent.
One day before Romney's visit to Israel, Obama signed legislation increasing military and civilian ties between the U.S. and Israel. And he authorized the release of an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to Romney's trip.
While Obama sometimes signs bills in private, the White House invited reporters and photographers into the Oval Office ? and made sure the cameras captured both the signing and the president flanked by Jewish-American leaders.
Obama never mentioned Romney or the election in his brief remarks. But he did use the opportunity to trumpet what he called his administration's "unshakable commitment to Israel." He added: "I have made it a top priority for my administration to deepen cooperation with Israel across a whole spectrum of security issues ? intelligence, military, technology."
The new money is aimed at helping Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system, called Iron Dome, that can block fire from nearby Gaza and other places.
Obama's move underscored the advantages that come with running as an incumbent: He has the power to authorize tangible assistance to Israel, while Romney can only make promises.
Obama made his own minor slip during the signing, first saying he was authorizing $70 million, then changing the sum to $70 billion even though the lower figure was correct.
Seeking to counter Romney's appearance at the Games, Obama's campaign also rolled out a television advertisement for American audiences during the opening ceremonies featuring the president promoting his middle-class economic agenda. It was a way for Obama to guarantee himself a presence during the event that Romney was attending. First lady Michelle Obama is attending Olympic events in London.
Romney, for his part, is to leave London on Saturday. His efforts to highlight his leadership during the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City were lost.

How do you combine the best of traditional academia with the modern market to meet the need of both? Are business schools the blueprint for institutions of the future, or an educational experiment gone wrong? How can we develop good managers and entrepreneurs in business schools? Santiago I?iguez de Onzo?o, president of Spain?s IE University, dean of IE business school and a member of the awarding body of accreditation agency EQUIS, tackles all these questions in his book ?The Learning Curve?.?

First of all the author states that ?management can still be one of the noblest vocations in the world? since he regards good management as one of the best antidotes to most of the world?s ills. Therefore business schools have to produce managers, and not MBAs. That?s not the same thing, he acknowledges, referring to the critics who claim that business schools attract the wrong people, teach them in the wrong way and produce graduates who are arrogant and overconfident.
I?iguez de Onzo?o ponders the criticism, but he still believes that good management and righteous behaviour can be taught, if education is a ?personal transformation process?. ?Business schools can provide a valuable platform for cultivating a series of virtues such as hard work, endurance, self-organisation, modesty and common sense.? Good managers, though, are forged over the course of their career, based on the repeated practice of the basic skills. The book is called ?The Learning Curve? after all and the analogy is valid: in the end good management is the result of continued learning over a period of time.
Business school can only be a stepping stone, though, but an important one nevertheless. As a result, I?iguez de Onzo?o believes that business schools should provide a more ?integrated and rounded education?. Too much specialization has undesirable consequences, he feels: the ?silo syndrome? and a narrowed perspective. IE Business School already introduced a number of humanities? courses as core part of the curriculum. The author also supports the idea of INSEAD?s former dean Frank Brown who suggested ?refresher? courses to be given every five years after graduation from an MBA. Wharton and Harvard already provide free top-up training to MBA alumni after seven years.?Other business schools will follow suit,? expects the author.
I?iguez de Onzo?o?s book is no surprise. He spends his life teaching management at a business school and must believe that good managers can be taught and that business schools are the place to do that. Nevertheless, the book is a worthwhile read. Firstly, he sums up all the challenges for business schools and then, secondly, gives an honest account what he feels must be done to keep schools abreast of the learning curve.
If you expect a hands-on report on how to get into a prestigious school and to thrive in it, you will be disappointed. I?iguez de Onzo?o?s book digs far deeper, challenging the future of business education as such, if many universities continue to bow to the commercial interests of the companies that finance their research, if they continue to treat students as ?customers? and not as students and if their business schools do not manage to deal with the notion that they foster greed and arrogance.

The brief by the law professors and the brief by the non-profit organizations were filed in support of the seventy-five family farmers, seed businesses, and agricultural organizations representing over 300,000 individuals and 4,500 farms that last year brought a protective legal action seeking a ruling that Monsanto could never sue them for patent infringement if they became contaminated by Monsanto?s genetically modified seed. The case was dismissed by the district court in February and that dismissal is now pending review by the Court of Appeals. The plaintiffs recently filed their opening appeal brief with the appeals court.
?Monsanto continues to claim that Plaintiffs? concerns about being accused of patent infringement after being contaminated by Monsanto?s transgenic seed are unsubstantiated and unjustified,? said attorney Dan Ravicher of the not-for-profit legal services organization Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT), which represents the plaintiffs in the suit against Monsanto known as Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association et al. v Monsanto. ?But now two impeccable groups have joined with plaintiffs in explaining to the Court of Appeals how real and legitimate their concerns really are, especially since Monsanto continues to refuse to simply promise never to sue contaminated farmers for patent infringement.?
The first group filing a brief in support of the OSGATA plaintiffs includes eleven prominent law professors from throughout the United States, including Professor Margo Bagley of the University of Virginia School of Law, Professor Michael Burstein of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Professor Rochelle C. Dreyfuss of the New York University School of Law, Professor Brett Frischmann of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Professor Erika George of University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, Professor Shubha Ghosh of the University of Wisconsin Law School, Professor Megan M. La Belle of the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, Professor Kali Murray of Marquette University Law School, Professor Ted Sichelman of the University of San Diego School of Law, Katherine J. Strandburg of the New York University School of Law, and Melissa Wasserman of the University of Illinois College of Law.
In their amicus brief, the law professors point out that, ?broad standing to challenge the validity of patents ensures that the courts can effectively play their critical role in screening out invalid patents.? They add, ?In actions challenging the validity of a patent, the alleged injury is not only the risk of an infringement suit, but a present restraint on economic activity due to the presence of a potentially invalid exclusive right.? The law professors went on to note, ?But the validity of issued patents is uncertain until they are tested in court. This uncertainty creates real and present risks for persons wishing to engage in economic activity that might be the subject of an issued patent?.When a person is deterred from undertaking valuable activity by the risk that the activity may encroach on another?s exclusive rights, that person has incurred an actual, concrete and particularized injury.?
?We are grateful for the brilliant and powerful amici briefs submitted to the appeals court by these two stellar groups, supporting our family farmers? quest for justice,? said Maine organic seed farmer Jim Gerritsen, President of lead Plaintiff, Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association. ?An erroneous interpretation of law by a single judge is not going to cause our farmers to abandon our rights to farm the way we choose, to grow good food and good seed for our families and for our customers, free from Monsanto?s trespass and contamination. Denial of the property rights of American farmers is an attack on the property rights of every American. We will fight until family farmers receive justice.?
The second group filing a brief in support of the OSGATA plaintiffs, made up of fourteen non-profit agricultural and consumer organizations, includes the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, Food and Water Watch, International Organic Inspectors Association, Maine Alternative Agriculture Association, Michigan Land Trustees, Natural Environmental Ecological Management, Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society, Organic Consumers Association, Slow Food USA, Virginia Association for Biological Farming, Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association, and Wisconsin Natural Food Associates.
In their amicus brief, the non-profit agricultural and consumer organizations point out, ?The Plaintiff and Amici organizations, farmers, and seed businesses have suffered significant harm due to the threat of patent infringement suits by Monsanto.? They also noted, ?Defendants have chosen to patent products that, by their very nature, will inevitably end up on the private property of people who have no desire to use them. Plaintiffs? uncontroverted allegations show that, for the first time in history, they can be sued for something as natural as pollen drift, while simultaneously being forced to take expensive and burdensome steps in order to continue their normal businesses. The quandary of this type of liability is precisely the sort of situation that the Declaratory Judgment Act was intended to address.? The amicus brief further explained, ?The Supreme court has stated that the plaintiff ?need not ?bet the farm?? yet in this case, that is precisely what the district court effectively required Plaintiffs to do in order to get their day in court ? continue farming the disputed crops until they are unquestionably liable to Defendants for potentially crippling levels of damage before being able to seek a declaratory judgment as to their rights?The district court noted that ?unlicensed ? and unintented ? use of transgenic seeds is inevitable?? but then failed to address the fact that such unlicensed use is actionable and places Plaintiffs at risk of enforcement actions by Defendants.?
?It?s time to end Monsanto?s scorched-earth campaign of frivolous lawsuits against America?s family farmers,? said Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of Food Democracy Now!, a grassroots community of more than 300,000 farmers and citizens dedicated to reforming food and agriculture. ?Monsanto?s claims against farmers for patent infringement are exceedingly weak, violating Americans? most basic sense of fairness and decency. Our Founding Fathers would be outraged?, stated Murphy.

The staff, from Vice President K. Justin Restaino down to every member of the workforce boasts a diverse interest in various hobbies. ?I?ve always encouraged the staff to get involved with things outside of work,? said K. Justin Restaino. ?A happy staff is a productive staff.?
Most notably, Bob Caruso, Sales Manager at Titan List & Mailing Services, placed 2nd in the open light heavyweight division for the 2012 West Palm Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship.
?I?ve always loved working out,? said Caruso. ?It clears my head. And being able to compete at a high level in the gym translates directly into work. The way I train is the way I live. I?m systematic about my diet, my lifts, and I look at work the same way.?
Caruso is currently training for the Ruby Classic Bodybuilding and Fitness Competition taking place in October.
When one thinks about attributes that make a businessperson successful, stereotypes abound. Gordon Gecko, the cutthroat trader from Oliver Stone?s classic film, Wall Street, comes to mind. Almost automatically, there is an assumption that to flourish in business there must be an obsession with the bottom line, a compulsive fixation for detail, and a ruthless streak that supersedes reasonable business practice. James Kaplan, a sales associate at Titan Lists, avidly practices Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is currently training for the Florida Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu State Championship on July 28, 2012.
?Jiu Jitsu is more than a martial art,? said Kaplan. ?It?s a way of life. The training is intense physically, but there?s also a mental component that is very difficult to master. When things get intense at the office I?m able to calm myself because of the things I?ve learned in Jiu Jitsu training. It works.?
Kaplan is coming off a first place finish in both the men?s No Gi intermediate ultra-heavy and men?s Gi ultra-heavy at the Naga West Palm Beach Grappling Championship in May.
?We?re really proud of what Bob and James have been able to do in competition,? said Restaino. ?But we?re also proud of what we?ve been able to do as a company lately. It?s just a bonus to be successful in and out of the office. Some companies have employees that take cigarette breaks ? Ours have push-up and pull-up competitions; that is when they actually take a break from their busy schedules.?
